Author: Eduardo MarescaMy name is Eduardo Maresca and I am married to a Filipina. I speak Tagalog and I’ve acquired a great deal of experience with Filipinos and the Filipino culture and mentality that I am happy to share through this blog Le Filippine sono un paese asiatico?(versione italiana del mio corrispondente articolo in inglese) La prima volta che misi piede nelle Filippine tornai a casa con la sensazione molto forte di non avere visto pressoché nulla dell’Asia.
People there look more similar to Polinesians than to those who live on the Asian mainland and the landscape also resembles that of the Pacific Islands because, from a strictly geographical point of view, the Philippines is situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and actually lies between the Asian mainland and Micronesia. When I think of Asia the very first mental picture I have is the far East, namely places like China, Japan or Korea. Then I broaden the picture and what also comes to mind is places like India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and, of course, the Middle East. The Philippines is none of these things but at the same time it includes some elements of other Asian countries. There is an expression that encapsulates rather nicely what the Philippines looks like and the expressions is: Filipinos are Malay in family, Chinese in business, Spanish in love and American in ambition. Another expression, pointing to the Western colonization of the country is: Filipinos lived 300 years in a convent (under Spanish domination) and 50 years in Hollywood (under American domination). Filipinos are Malay in family The ancestors of the population of the Philippines, at least the vast majority of it, came from Malaysia and, under this aspect, Filipinos are much more akin to Pacific Islanders than they are to Asians. That’s why Filipinos look closer to Hawaiians, Maori etc., since they came from the same Malay-polynesian group. They are Austronesian Tagalog is an Austronesian language like the languages spoken in the Pacific Islands. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Chinese in business This expression reveals that Filipinos have had a lot of connections with the Asian Mainland, and particularly with China, while Pacific Islanders are, by and large, culturally and socio-economically cut off from Asia. Not only are Filipinos Chinese in business, in the sense that Chinese business people are very active in the Philippines, they have also been strongly influenced by China in such areas as cooking (Filipinos eat noodles and spring rolls) and family relationships (such Tagalog expressions like ate and kuya, or “older sister” and “older brother” come from Chinese). Not only have Filipinos been exposed to Chinese immigration, the country has also been exposed to Arabic immigration, to the point that part of Mindanao (the Southernmost island group of the Philippines) is a Muslim area. The “Culture Shock Philippines” book by Alfredo and Grace Roces says “At about the same time as the Chinese, the Arabs had also come to the Philippines to trade. In the Southeast Asian region the founding of Malacca, followed by the conversion of its leader in 1414, spread the influence of Islam among the Malay peoples, reaching southern Philippine shores in the 14th century. Islam remains a dominant influence in the southern Philippines, a factor that unified the kinship groups in the area to resist colonisation by Spain effectively and strongly for 400 years, and put up a strong resistance to American colonisation. Although only a small minority within the Philippine population—about 5 per cent—the Muslims have added cultural character to the nation. The Filipino Christian majority today express pride and admiration” Spanish in love and American in ambition The fact that the Philippines have been exposed to 300 years of Spanish colonization and 50 years of American colonization sets them apart from both the rest of Asia and Polinesia and gives the Philippines a strong Western veneer to the point that a Westerner like me really feels like having landed in a Western country when he first sets foot in the Philippines. In the Philippines you can find Spanish architecture as well as American-style skyscrapers. Actually the Philippines was not even directly controlled by Spain, rather it was ruled by the Spanish via Mexico so, in this respect, the Philippines could also be viewed as a slice of Latin America situated between Asia and Polinesia but, at the same time millions of Filipinos speak English rather fluently and the American impact on the country can easily be observed by a tourist who sets foot in the Philippines. So, yes, the Philippines is a very unique place: it’s a mixture of Asia, Polinesia, U.S.A. and Latin America. From a selfish point of view I should encourage you to visit Italy, because my country will badly need tourists after this Coronavirus crisis but I must honestly tell you that I would rather encourage you to visit the Philippines than to come to Italy. It’s geografic position as well as its exposure to all kinds of cultures and its incredible mixed architecture make the Philippines a place like none! A major problem that Filipinos are dealing with in this period is how to maintain social distance when big families share tiny homes. I stumbled upon a funny Facebook post that shows a unique way a Filipino family is using diskarte to keep social distance in their bahay kubo. Social distancing is, obviously, not mandatory inside one’s home but, apparently, this particular family is super law-abiding and wants to go the extra mile.
The area know as Metro Manila is wrapped in such a thick and dense cloud of smog that it is almost impossible to see the nearby Sierra Madre Mountains. Well, few weeks of community quarantine have made it possible, as smog has abated quite a lot. Not only that: it seems like even Manila Bay is becoming some sort of Boracay. So here is the answer to the question that many experts have tried to answer for decades: how can Manila pollution problems be solved? Evidently by drastically reducing car traffic! How? Not easy but my impression as a foreigner is that way too many Filipinos use their cars or ride on a jeepney unnecessarily, even to cover very short distances. So letting go of that habit would probably go a long way. Share this:Eduardo Marescabuwanang dalaw, Coronavirus, Coronavirus Quarantine4 Comments 2 Minutes Love in the Time of…Coronavirus![]() I have heard about a book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez entitled “Love in the Time of Cholera”. I haven’t read it yet but it seems like it would be a good idea to do so given the particular time we are living in. When I complete reading “The 5 a.m. Club” by Robin Sharma I might check out Marquez’s book but for now I have to figure out how to remain in a state of love during the quarantine because, like all couples in the various countries that are under lockdown, my wife and I will be spending a lot of time together without any possibilities to go on a solo retreat when the atmosphere gets intense. The increased anxiety, and the irritability that goes with it, that characterize this unusual time make it difficult to practice some of the keys to a happy marriage that experts talk about.
Now, because during the lockdown we will be spending a heck of more time together, chances are that I will see more clearly the ugly things than the amazing things in my wife (and she will see my ugly side of course). Because it is going to get increasingly difficult to see the things we appreciate in each other it’s time to practice this appreciation thing even more consistently. So my battle plan is to make it a daily practice to look at as many pictures as possible of the best moments my wife and I spent together throughout all these years. Also, because I regularly put down in writing the things I love about my wife (as experts suggest) and the reasons why I fell in love with her in the first place, I am thinking about spending more time doing this and doing it even more than once a day. I am also working out a strategy to be able to (somehow) do other things that are important in a relationship, namely:
We won’t be able to eat out for weeks to come (or even longer…maybe) so my idea is that we could go on an imaginary date by turning our house into a restaurant (provided that grocery stores will stay open). We could perhaps prepare a special Filipino meal together and she could teach me (for the 20th time because I keep forgetting) how to make lumpya or Filipino spring rolls (she once taught me how to make pandesal and I did a great job but, as usual, I forgot how to do it).
There are different ways to go about working out a viable strategy to prevent the inevitable tension that characterizes a lockdown from eating away at love and intimacy. At least I have started thinking about it and putting down in writing some ideas. I’ll try to come up with more ideas and insights in the days to come…as a matter of urgency! But I have a lot of things that make my isolation much sweeter like: First and foremost my beautiful wife who is sweetening this unusual time with pure and pristine love, a love that isn’t tainted by any pressures to go out and do something, just pure cuddling I have also discovered an app, similar to Skype, called Zoom that allows us to do videoconferencing with up to 100 people for up to 40 minutes (with the free version) and we are using it both for our regular spiritual gatherings and for other kinds of Filipino social gatherings, without having to spend any money on gas or experience the burden of finding parking ![]() And I have managed to do my regular weekend excursion by means of Google Maps! This Filipino trait is known as diskarte. A serious problem most people have at the moment here in Italy is how and where to find face masks to protect themselves from Covid 19. I don’t have any problems in this regard because my wife comes from the land of diskarte so I have my personal collection of homemade face masks. Face masks are almost impossible to find in this country at the moment but, a couple of weeks before the nation-wide lockdown was introduced, I already had my Filipino-made masks. I am not quite sure about the actual effectiveness of these masks against the virus, but grocery stores won’t let me in without one, so these ones should do their job and grant me access to the nearest supermarket. They’re super glossy but dry down super nice and stain for a long time. I usually put it on and let it dry for a bit, then blot the glossiness away. I’ve seen a lot of people love their mousse tint, but I haven’t tried them yet. I also really like Innisfree Vivid Cotton Ink, it’s velvet and smooth and not overly drying. It’s a velvet-matte texture. Finally, Romand lip products are really really nice! I like more hydrating lip products so I get the gloss tints. The Juicy Lasting Tint has been a favorite of many people, and they’ve added a lot more colors to the original line that are more natural and wearable for all skin tones. It’s moisturizing and it will dry down after a few hours, but the tint is very natural and not patchy at all. source https://kristelmaedelvalle1.wordpress.com/2020/04/09/what-are-your-favorite-korean-lipsticks/ via Blogger What are your favorite Korean lipsticks 4/5/2020 0 Comments Rules Rules are simple you just post the name of the item youre on the fence about purchasing and whether or not you want people who have experience with theago Kikumasamune High Moist Sake Lotion! I have combo skin, but I get super dry during the cold winters and this stuff is a HG product during those times. It has this thick caramel like consistency and smells heavily of….. well, caramel/honey. I do not have sensitive skin, so the fragrance really doesn’t bother me. I would like to add that I personally feel that it sort of leaves this moisturizing/oily-ish film across my skin, and some people may not like that, but I love it during the winter because it locks in hydration to my skin. My main point it, I would say it’s great for people who have dry skin. I’m also happy that my oily T-zone and chin does not freak out when I out this on as well.level 2itsally53 points·14 hours ago·edited 12 hours ago I will talk you out of it. It is moisturizing but I just find that I don’t have enough time to reach for it and leave it on for over an hour (the longer you leave on, the better it works). I haven’t found that it improved my skin the next day. Sure, the skin feels moisturized right after I do it but I don’t see any long term benefits of it. It is also really thick and really sticky. It gets in your hair and creates a sticky mess. I have a tough time getting it off and sometimes it feels like there is an oily film residue left after which gives the effect of ‘moisturized’ skin. The mask is a little overpriced for the ‘benefits’ they claim. I would much rather do a sheet mask where the clean up is way more convenient.level 2dindin_din2 points·12 hours ago I’ve tried a sample pf this product from Yesstyle. I tried the Laniege Cream Skin Refiner in a sample size I got for a few bucks in Korea and now I’m wishing I bought more. I tried the Klairs one but with the essential oils a few years ago as one of their one time use sample packets after I over exfoliated and it was the only thing that didn’t sting. If your skin needs moisture (oil, emolliency,) go with Laneige. I personally didn’t like Laneige much. It’s HG, I’ve been through 4 bottles, it’s super brightening and softening. Having tried tons of other FTEs including SKII, I always, always go back to the Secret Key. Tons of Galactomyces and some Niacinamide. It’s perfect for me. In fact, I can’t wait to finish my From Nature AGE Treatment Essence so I can go back to Secret Key. But… OUT If you’re looking for a replacement for Hada Labo, this ain’t it. You are going to be disappointed. The Secret Key is not hydrating. It’s not a hydrator. It a “prep” product. It is not going to be a substitute for Hada Labo, which is a hydrating toner loaded with Hyaluronic Acid, in the hydration department. It’s just not even comparable. It can definitely be layered which will dramatically increase the hydration, but if you’re looking for something that’s comparable to Hada Labo with one layer, this is not it.Continue this thread level 2gemiba4 points·23 hours ago I have the Rose edition. It’s a nice starter for moisturising, my skin absorbs the first two layers very quickly, but I’d say it’s not nearly as moisturising as the Hada Labo. I was looking at Life-Flo and The Ordinary because of cost, but I’m definitely open to others! Backstory: Debating on replacing my Stratia Liquid Gold with rosehip oil mixed into Cerave PM (PM has worked well for me in the past) for a cheaper moisturizing option w/ ceramides/niacinamide. LG healed my moisture barrier when I went on Differin last year, so I’m wondering if it’s worth continuing with it? I haven’t tried rosehip oil on its own yet, but I don’t think I’d have a bad reaction since it’s present in LG.level 21perfectstranger3 points·14 hours ago Unfortunately, oils are something you have to try for yourself to see how your skin reacts. If you mix any dry oil with a moisturizer and your skin doesn’t absorb it and it just sits there doing nothing, that’s the sign to drop it. Please, before it gets worse, especially if your moisture barrier still needs repair. Years ago, when I broke my moisture barrier, I used rosehip oil with a light Cerave lotion I had tolerated for years. The rosehip never sank into my skin and came off if I touched my face. Dry patches increased and redness never reduced. My skin got so sensitive that the Cerave lotion stung. I switched to Stratia LG and it absorbed so much better. My dry patches decreased and even if my redness didn’t reduce much, my skin calmed down. Now that my moisture barrier is way less broken, my skin might react better to a rosehip oil and moisturier combo, but the only way to find out is to try again. Also, rosehip oil can expire quickly and ideally should be kept in a fridge or dark, cool place. If you think your barrier can handle some experimentation, go for it.Continue this thread level 2oflonelynights2 points·14 hours ago oh man i love my rosehip seed oil from the ordinary! nothing gives my skin an all day healthy glow like it. it’s a firm staple for me now!Continue this thread level 1Vivid-Berry0 points·17 hours ago This year’s special edition Innisfree no sebum powder design is just killing me. I think my face has become sensitized to my current sunscreen, the innisfree blueberry rebalancing watery sun cream because of the fragrances. I have dry skin and am currently using tret which is giving me a lovely orange peel texture. I am sensitive to many fragrances and get headaches or feel nauseous if something is heavily scented and the smell does not dissipate. I previously liked the 2017 Biore Watery Sunscreen even if it didn’t reapply well and made my eyes watery and didn’t like the Canmake Mermaid UV because it pills immediately. I can’t stand the smell of the Shiseido Senka Aging Care sunscreen (like neutrogena sunscreen) and will have to use it on my legs or something. The Shiseido Senka Mineral Water sunscreen made my face dry and tight immediately after application.level 2Jeejerlicious1 point·13 hours ago I think if you have dry skin you’ll like this as it feels like a nice moisturizer and dries down to a semi-matte finish.
